My parents were born into a culture of people always traveling to remote places looking to explore their religious freedoms. My grandparents settled in the northern hills of Mexico, not the Mexico I have come to know and love, rather, a lifestyle, they felt, of unattainable rules and restrictions. The story I have been told, is that my grandparents loaded their twelve children into the back of a tarp-covered truck with blankets covering large heated stones to warm them, and headed to Canada. What about that could have been easy?
Today, when I look at my large extended family, I see the privilege we have because of their decision. One that came about by the courage and strength and a desperate need for change. And they never stopped until they had it. In the end, they held on to what really mattered, and gave us a beautiful life, full of freedoms, hope and inspiration. I am humbled by this.
