Believe, Issue 25
About seven years ago I gave my father a book for Christmas, Bill Clinton’s autobiography My Life. Whenever I spoke to my dad, I would ask him how his reading was going. Each time he would relate some new Clinton anecdote or experience. I could tell my dad was really falling for the charismatic former American president.
A few months later I was travelling to New York on business and I visited my parents the night before I left. “New York, eh?” my dad said. “Why don’t you call up Bill and tell him I want to build him a grandfather clock.” (Constructing beautiful, one-of-a-kind clocks is my father’s passion.) “Bill lives in New York now,” my dad pointed out. “You could look him up.” I jokingly told Dad that I would call on Mr. Clinton when I got there....
The next day I arrived in New York, dropped my bags at the hotel and immediately headed back out on the street for a dose of that patented NYC hustle and bustle. Walking down 51st Street towards Broadway, I was taking it all in when I rounded a corner and there, right in front of me, was a sudden vision. The figure looked larger than life, almost illuminated. I could hear the familiar voice, the unmistakable laugh. It was Bill Clinton walking towards me! His arm nearly brushed mine as he passed. He was with Hillary and they were chatting and smiling as they strolled down the street.
